Vehicle Description
1973 Porsche-KMW SP-30
Porsche-KMW SP-30 (chassis #008) was the eighth and last KMW ever built. The car was designed by Jo Karasek and built by Erwin Kremer’s highly successful Porsche racing team.
History
The car was designed to compete in the European Interserie competition which was modeled after America’s Can-Am series. The early fields were filled with storming Porsche, McLaren, March, BRM and Lola Can-Am cars along with a few Ferrari 512S and Alpha T33/3. The first year’s winner was Juergen Neuhaus in a Porsche 917K. Reference: Hendrik Medrow, Interserie Most- uber 600 fotos CD.Reference: Can-Am Photo History by Pete Lyons, Page 165.

The KMW SP-30 was campaigned in over 59 races from 1973-1984 by the likes of famous European drivers such as Hans Muller Perschl, Sepp Greger, Kurt Hild and Dr. Siggi Brunn.Reference: Original Wagen Pass (log book) with all race certification and ownership information. On its debut, the original KMW had a 2-litre six cylinder engine delivering 230 bhp.The ultimate version was fitted with a turbo charged 911R four-cam engine. If you cross reference the original Wagen Pass (log book) and the race results from a few Interseries races, you will see that this particular KMW actually ran the turbo charged 911R four-cam engine at a few venues but was unsuccessful and went back to a conventional motor.Reference: Porsche Specials By Lothar Boschen and Jurgen Barth, page 100.
After the KMW SP-30 retired from active racing it was moved to the Sinsheim Technik Museum in Heidelberg, Germany where it was on display for 10 years.Reference: Sinsheim Technik Museum Brochure with KMW on the cover. In 1995, the KMW SP-30 was purchased by Dave White of Tampa, Florida. The car raced at the world’s largest ever historic Can-Am race, “The Can-Am 30th Anniversary Celebration and Race.” The KMW was featured on the cover of Victory Lane Magazine in September 1996 chasing a one of a kind 1968 Ferrari 612.
